VCT 2 - Round 2 Story

By Bikash Sherpa

Match #09   : Arkadip (ArkatheLogan) vs Matcho (hopelessindian)

Result          :  Matcho Won

With the 'hope' of making into the quarterfinals, Matcho steadily kept the pressure up with black pieces and capitalize on few inaccuracies by Arkadip. I would say it is a flawless game from Matcho. Well done!

               ---------------------

Match #10   : Jongol (shayon62) vs Neha (BheegiBasanti)

Result          :  Neha Won

This game had many misses from Jongol. He badly needed a win but could not take it when Neha offered a knight and later a rook. On the other hand Neha kept on fighting and eventually won the game (kudos to her 73% accuracy). Now she has a good chance of reaching the knockout stage.

               ---------------------

Match #11   : Diesel (mirmadan) vs Huso (chessyoman)

Result          :  Huso Won

For the 2nd consecutive game with white pieces, Huso opened with D4 (my favorite choice) and the game was even until he seized the opportunity to put the rook in the 7th rank (one of the basic principles of rook in the middle and end game.

                ---------------------

Match #12   : Nandita (nandy111) vs Sandy (Buhu_s)

Result          :  Sandy Won

This game was a treat to watch with positional play from both players and Sandy put up a masterclass, again winning an extra pawn (which was promoted to queen just before Nandita resigned). 93% accuracy also could not win her this game! I think she is the most unlucky player in this tournament which such tough games, and it looks like she might not make it to the quarters. One to watch out for the future tournaments.

                  ---------------------

Match #13   : Maddy (maddy1847) vs Aneek (Aneek_Roy)

Result          :  Aneek Won

I just watched this game a few hours ago and it was a shock to me the way it ended. Maddy opened really well and even won a piece with nice play. But suddenly the game was over as somehow Maddy forgot about the black queen. Bad luck or maybe rustiness, but I am sure he will bounce back in the next tournament. As for Aneek, he surprised everyone (including himself) by winning both games and leading Group A. I should be aware of his mango powers as we might meet in the quarter finals.

                    ---------------------

Match #14   : Irfan (Irfan_raza6) vs Pablo (changpablo)

Result          :  Irfan Won

Irfan opened with E4 with white pieces and it soon turned into Sicilian defense. I can say this was the sharpest game of the tournament so far where Irfan sacrificed his bishop on H7 to get massive king side attack. It was a brave decision because at some point chess.com engine was showing black was better, but it paid of for him in his Queen Vs Rook+Bishop+Knight battle.

If Sandy showed us positional play, then Irfan showed us his tactical powers. Definitely power play from top seeds.

                    ---------------------

Match #15   : Bikash(BIKASHSHERPA) vs Masid(masidhere)

Result          :  Bikash Won

Thankfully I got white this time and I opened with D4, C4(Queens gambit). I thought I played ok but my victory was more to do with Masid's lack of piece development (and wrong castling choice which ultimately led to queen blunder)than my chess knowledge. Masid needs to be play a virtual knockout game with Huso and I would like to suggest him that if you develop pieces and castle asap then it would be really great (otherwise your play is good)!

                    ---------------------

Match #16   : Anustup(anustupsikdar) vs Avik(champ2w)

Result          :  Avik won

Avik played like champ as his username suggest, opened with D4 and the game turned into Sicilian defense. He kept up pressure and virtually finished the game with beautiful Queen and King fork with his Knight (I think this is the most beautiful and most satisfying tactics). He will have to be equally or even more sharp and good when he plays top seed Sandy in the next game.

                    ---------------------
