VCT 3 - Rules and Prizes
VCT 3 – Rules and Regulations
- All games to be played in the tournament will be 15| 10 Rapid games on chess.com. White or Black will be determined by chess.com automatically at the start of every match.
- Please join VCT - Thug Chess Club on chess.com. It is not mandatory, but we may come up with some initiatives in the future.
- Seeding of players will be done as a part of the registration process. Ratings of the players in the below mentioned time period will be considered for seeding. –
- Registration date and time - 03/07/2020 20:00 – 21:00
- There will be 4 Leagues played and the qualified players will play knockout matches to determine the Champion. Please see the Tournament Format for more details.
- Points accumulated in the League matches– Win - 3, Draw – 1, Loss – 0
- In between the leagues, when two or more players in same group have same points, then players with most number of matches won will be placed on top. If number of matches won are also same, then players with more Average Accuracy (please see below) will be placed on top. This is for convenient display of the ranking of players in the league table during the leagues. The qualification of players for the next round will depend on Point 7.
- If two or more players within a group have same points at the end of the league, and in case a decision needs to be taken for qualification, then players with more number of matches won will be selected. If number of matches won are also same, then, for two players, the winner in the head to head match between them in the league will be selected. For more than two players with same points and wins, or if the head – head is a draw, then player with maximum Opponent's Point (please see below) will be selected.
- Walkover is allowed. The player getting the walkover will get full 3 points. The accuracy in that match won’t be counted for both the players.
- Game timings – An indicative date for the matches will be published upfront in the match schedule and in the Whatsapp group by the Coordinators. Players can mutually agree on a time for that match. Matches can be preponed or postponed by a day, if mutually agreed between the players. Please note, if there is a ‘no show’ from any player (15 minutes waiting period) on a mutually agreed timeslot, the opponent player gets the walkover.
- One of the many good things about VCT is that the schedule is flexible. If you have other priority work or facing any odd circumstances, please inform the Coordinators upfront, and they will do a reasonable rearrangement.
- If there is a network issue, then chess.com will automatically consider the other player as the winner. The player who lost the match (who suffered network disruption) can appeal to the Coordinators for a rematch. Coordinators along with Technical Panel will review the last position and other factors to decide and confirm if a rematch can be granted to the player or not.
- Stalemate/repetitive moves lead to Draw in chess.com matches. In league matches, this will result to 1-point addition to each of the contesting players and there will be no rematch.
- If there is a Draw in any knockout matches, there will be a rematch (Rapid 15|10) immediately. The player who played white in the previous match would play black in the rematch. The process will continue, unless we have a decider match (if the rematch also ends up in a draw). Only the latest deciding matches will be recorded in VCT 3.
- If anyone is suspected and then caught in unfair practices, like cheating in any form, using engines, or impersonating for others, he/she will be banned from the current and all future tournaments of VCT. VCT committee is very much driven to establish fair play in the tournaments.
- Allocation of the original 24 players in VCT 3 Groups and allocation of qualified players for Quarter Final matches will be done on a public forum so that all players can see and experience the same. Details will be published soon.
- In case of any dispute, the decision of VCT 3 committee will be final.

Average Accuracy (AA) = Sum total of accuracy score in all matches played / Number of matches played (except walkover)
Opponent's Point (OP) = Sum total of the value of the pieces left on board for opponent in matches won by the player. Explanation of Opponent's point rule is given below with illustrations.
First, let's see the point value for each piece in Chess -
Pawn = 1
Bishop = 3
Knight = 3
Rook = 5
Queen = 9
Now value of King is infinite, but in theory it is 3.5. But the value of King is not considered for Opponent's Point calculation, as the King will always be on board after the match on chess.com.
So the 1st picture is the match end position for Sudipta (white) and Aneek (black). Sudipta won by resignation.
OP for Sudipta from this match = Value of (4 pawns + 2 rooks) = 4*1 + 2*5 = 4 + 10 = 14
The 2nd picture is the match end position for Abhishek (white) and Neha (black). Neha won by checkmate.
OP for Neha from this match = Value of (6 Pawns + 2 Rooks + 1 Bishop + Queen) = 6*1 + 2*5 + 1*3 + 9 = 6 + 10 + 3 + 9 = 28.
Now for comparison's sake, if Sudipta and Neha were tied up on same point, also has the same number of matches won, and their H2H is a draw, then player with most OP in matches won (which will be same), gets the preference.
So here, Neha gets the nod over Sudipta.
Idea is, it is better to win a match with more power of your opponent left on board!
